How to set up your account and start using Midjourney

Here’s what you need to know right now.

  1. Midjourney is basically a bot. A piece of software that runs on a chat platform.
  2. It creates images from your text instructions.
  3. The chat platform Midjourney runs on is called Discord. It’s used for a lot of different chat applications, from professional to recreational.
  4. To use Midjourney, you need a Discord account (free) and a Midjourney subscription (not free).

Starting from the very beginning, here’s how you start making images with Midjourney.

1. Log In To Discord

Discord has a web version, an app for your phone, and an app for your laptop of desktop. You can get the Midjourney bot to do your image-creation bidding via any of these Discord portals.

You have to create and verify your Discord account.

2. Get Yourself a Midjourney Plan

You need a Midjourney plan to interact with the Midjourney bot on Discord. You can’t get your Midjourney account started without your verified Discord account. So if you skipped step 1, rewind and do that part first.

  • Visit the Midjourney account creation page.
  • Sign in using your verified Discord account.
  • Choose a subscription plan that suits your needs.
  • Go to Subscription Plans for information on pricing and the features available with each tier.

Right now, the cost of each plan is:

  • Press the + button at the bottom of the server list.
  • In the pop-up window, click the Join a Server button.

4. Join Any Newbie or General channel.

Each server contains multiple “channels.” When you join the Midjourney server, you'll see a handful of channels listed in the sidebar.

Find and enter (by clicking) any channel labeled general-# or newbie-#. These channels are here for beginners to start using the Midjourney bot. The Midjourney Bot will not generate images in other channels.

5. Use the /imagine Command

Commands allow you to interact with the Midjourney bot.

They’re used to create images, change default settings, monitor user info, and perform other helpful tasks. The /imagine command generates a unique image from a short text description (which you’ve probably heard called a Prompt).

How to use the  /imagine command

  1. Type '/imagine prompt:' in the message field, just like you’re writing a message to other users in the chat. You can also select the /imagine command from the list of available slash commands that pop up when you type '/'.

  2. Type a description of the image you want to create in the prompt field.

  3. Send your message. The bot will interpret your text prompt and begin generating the images.

6. Accept the Terms Of Service

Before generating images, the Midjourney bot will ask you to accept the official terms of service. If you don’t accept, you won’t be able to play with Midjourney.

7. Images Come Together

After submitting a text prompt, the Midjourney bot processes your request, creating 4 unique image options in under 60 seconds.

This process uses advanced Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). Most of what you pay for in your subscription goes toward the GPU processing time you’re expected to use. You can also keep track of your remaining GPU time (Fast Time Remaining) by using the /info command.

8. Upscale or Create Variations

Now you have 4 images.

Look beneath your images and you’ll see two rows of buttons are now available.

Create Variations

The U buttons help you single out the particular image you like. It allows you to download the associated image, and gives you access to additional tools related to that image.

The 🔄 button re-runs a prompt. In this case, it would re-run the original prompt producing a new grid of images.

The V buttons can create variations of the selected image. Each button generates a new image grid based on the style of your original image. So that’s 4 more images from the 1 image you liked, out of your original 4.

9. Use the Enhancing and Modifying Tools

After choosing an image you want to experiment further with, an expanded set of options becomes available.

Like everything in Midjourney, most of the tools create 4 more version of the image you want to adjust. So play around with it!

You can zoom, you can pan, you can create variations with a single click.

10. Save Your Image

Click on the image to open it to full size, and then right-click and choose Save image. On mobile, long-tap the image and then tap the download icon in the top right corner.

All images are immediately available to view on
